Femi Adesina, former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has defended the former president's repeated medical trips to the United Kingdom. Adesina stated that Buhari's survival depended on receiving quality medical care abroad, given the limitations of Nigeria's healthcare system at the time.
During an interview on Channels Television, Adesina explained that Buhari had been receiving medical treatment in London long before his presidency. He argued that changing medical teams mid-treatment would have been unwise, as the UK doctors were well-acquainted with Buhari's medical history.
Adesina emphasized that Buhari's decision to seek medical care abroad was based on necessity, rather than luxury or disregard for local healthcare. He noted that the former president's survival and ability to lead the country were directly linked to the quality of care he received abroad.
"If Buhari had relied solely on Nigerian hospitals for treatment, he may not have survived his health challenges," Adesina said. "One has to be alive first to get certain things corrected or changed in the country."
Adesina urged critics to consider the context of Buhari's medical trips, rather than viewing them as a sign of weakness or lack of faith in Nigeria's healthcare system. He maintained that Buhari's priority was to receive the best possible medical care, ensuring his ability to lead the country effectively.
