Emir Sanusi's Absence at Buhari's Funeral: What We Know

A close associate of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, Muhammadu Dallatu, revealed that the monarch was absent at former President Muhammadu Buhari's funeral due to an official assignment in the United Kingdom.

Dallatu stated that Emir Sanusi traveled to London and is expected to return to Nigeria on Wednesday. He added that the emir participated in the 2025 Access Bank Polo Tournament in Surrey, England, over the weekend.

In contrast, Emir Aminu Ado Bayero attended Buhari's state funeral in Daura. Bayero's spokesperson confirmed that the emir was accompanied by traditional rulers from Jigawa State.

The Kano Emirate has been embroiled in a leadership dispute following Sanusi's dethronement in 2020. The dispute intensified when Governor Abba Yusuf reinstated Sanusi as the sole Emir in May 2024, but Ado Bayero refused to vacate the palace.
