A serving officer of the Nigerian Police Force, Inspector Stephen Enang, tragically passed away on Tuesday night while watching the UEFA Champions League clash between Arsenal and Real Madrid at a football viewing centre in Calabar, Cross River State.
Inspector Enang, a passionate Arsenal supporter, was attached to the Akim Police Division along IBB Way in Calabar. He was a familiar face at the football viewing centre located on Abang-Asang Street, Calabar Municipality Local Government Area, where the incident occurred.
Witnesses said Enang showed no signs of illness prior to the match. He was reportedly in high spirits, celebrating enthusiastically as Arsenal scored their first, second, and third goals.
A close friend of the deceased, who spoke on condition of anonymity, recounted the tragic moment:
“Before the match, he was hale and hearty. There was no indication that anything was wrong. He was very quiet, soft-spoken, and loved football. He was a die-hard Arsenal fan. We were all watching the game together. When his team scored, he was visibly excited—jumping up and celebrating each goal.
“But after the final whistle, we noticed he wasn’t getting up like everyone else. That was when we discovered he was unresponsive.”
Inspector Enang was rushed to the Police Hospital at Akim, where medical personnel made efforts to resuscitate him, but he was sadly confirmed dead.
Efforts to get an official statement from the Cross River State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the command's spokesperson, SP Irene Ugbo, did not respond to calls or messages regarding the incident.
